Formerly a rectory, Bracken House has been converted into a small hotel without losing the general ambiance of a country house. It is delightfully situated in its own little world of eight peaceful acres, with streams and ponds. The garden attracts lots of birds including regular nuthatches, housemartins, ravens, occasional woodpeckers, buzzards circling overhead, and elusive wild tawny owls. It is also home to our resident injured owls. Grey wagtails frequent the pond with mallards and moorhens breed, and early risers may catch a heron or kingfisher. Located at 750 feet above sea level, there are magnificent views over rolling hills and wooded combes to the Taw Estuary and Hartland Point in the far distance. Our bedrooms vary quite a lot - One was the Rector's, one was his dressing room and another was the guest room, where the Bishop would stay. They all have en suite facilities including toilets and washbasins. Six have baths with showers, whilst the other two have walk-in showers. All bedrooms are equipped with hot drink facilities, bottled Devon water, hairdryers, colour televisions, push-button radios, books and magazines. Two bedrooms are on the ground floor, one of them completely level with all of the public rooms. We would be pleased to discuss their suitability for anyone with mobility problems.
