Italy occupies a Peninsula running southeast into the Mediterranean from the mainland of Europe. To the North of Italy are France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

On the eastern side of Italy is the former Yugoslavia across the Adriatic Sea.

On the western side of Italy is the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Italy has a number of Islands which are popular with Tourists, the biggest of these Islands and one of the most popular for tourists is Sicily.

Rome (Roma) is the capital city of Italy which enjoys some fantasic historic as well as modern architecture. It is argued that Rome is one of the most photogenic cities in the world.

Northern Italy shares the Alps with France, Austria and Switzerland. A chain on large mountains called the Apennines run down the central column of Italy. Italy also featurs some famous volcanoes. Italy boast the only active volcanoe i the mainland of Europe -Vesuvius. Mount Etna on the Isle of Sicily is one of the world's largest volcanoes.

In 2005 the population of Italy was estimated to be at over at 58 million
